Matte Black Kitchen Backsplash in Midtown Sacramento

Dramatic matte black subway tile kitchen backsplash with open metal shelving and glassware in Midtown Sacramento home near K Street

About This Project

This kitchen renovation near K Street in Midtown Sacramento used matte black subway tile on the full backsplash wall, running floor to ceiling between open metal shelving units. The matte finish on black tile shows fingerprints and grease less than a gloss finish would in a working kitchen.

The open shelving was installed before tile. We tiled around the shelf brackets and behind the shelves, which required removing the shelves temporarily and reinstalling after grouting. Planning that sequence in advance saved a full day of rework.

Grout color was matched to the tile — dark gray rather than black — so the grout lines read as part of the pattern rather than disappearing entirely or standing out as a different element.
