Floor Tile Installation
Flat. Solid. No hollow spots. Floor tile done to last in Sacramento homes.
What Makes a Good Floor Tile Install
A floor tile installation fails at the subfloor. Deflection — the slight bounce in a wood subfloor under foot traffic — cracks grout lines and eventually the tile itself. We measure deflection before any material is ordered. If the subfloor needs stiffening, we address it.
Sacramento homes built before 1970 often have plank subfloors rather than plywood. Plank subfloors require a layer of underlayment before tile. We assess and recommend the right approach for what is actually there.
Common Floor Tile Questions
What is the largest tile size that works on a residential floor?
Large-format tiles (24x24 and larger) require a flatter substrate than smaller tiles. The industry standard for large-format is no more than 1/8 inch variation over 10 feet. We check this before recommending tile size.
Can tile go directly over existing tile?
Sometimes. The existing tile must be fully bonded, flat, and the added height must not create a trip hazard at transitions. We assess each situation individually.
What is a lippage and why does it matter?
Lippage is the height difference between the edges of adjacent tiles. Excessive lippage is a trip hazard and a visual problem. We use leveling clips on large-format tile to keep lippage within acceptable limits during installation.
