Herringbone Entry Floor in Alhambra Triangle

Close-up of glossy gray rectangular tiles in herringbone pattern with dark grout lines in Alhambra Triangle bungalow entry

About This Project

The entry of this 1920s Alhambra Triangle bungalow received a new floor in glossy gray rectangular tile laid in herringbone pattern. The original fir plank subfloor was still solid but had too much flex for direct tile installation.

We installed a Schluter Ditra decoupling membrane over the plank subfloor before setting any tile. The membrane isolates the tile layer from subfloor movement, which is critical in a 100-year-old raised-foundation home.

Herringbone layout requires establishing a true center line and working outward symmetrically. Cuts at the perimeter were planned so no piece smaller than half a tile appears at the walls.
